Deer and the Rut

Discussion in 'Maine Deer Hunting' started by sremington, Oct 4, 2005.

When the rut is in full swing, deer tend to stay near a water source?

  1. Yes

    93.3%
  2. No

    6.7%
  1. What are your thoughts on this?? Do deer habits change during the rut when it comes to water supply?

Actually, I voted no but I don't know that I know the answer to that question. Are you talking all deer in general or just bucks or just does?

Yes their habits change but I don't know about the water source. I think I still say consuming water habits would not change any.

  3. The question pertains to all deer activity during the rut.

  4. I was actually reading an article the other night I found interesting. A lot of people think deer don't drink much from water sources and get most of their H2O from plants, etc...

When deer are in the middle of their rut the energy level of both buck and doe is increased causing the deer to become more thristy than normal. When this is the case you will generally find deer around ponds, streams, and rivers more often for replenishment than normal.

So, if deer are in rut you may want to hunt around water and look for common routes and stand watch..

  5. In Maine, I always hunt near a water source.
