First Bear Picture of the Season

Rod Davis one of our contributing writers for MHT just emailed us from the woods of Maine. He is at Libby’s Camps in Oxbow on his vacation and bear hunt. He sent this short story with a picture of some other campers having some bear hunting success.

This is what he emailed us. Short story follows the photo:

I am forwarding you a neat photo for the magazine. The first night of bear hunting here at Libby’s was marked by a first-time kill by 18 year old Meghan Pidgeon of Salem, Ohio. She is here with her Mom, Dad, and two younger brothers, all bear hunting.

She shot her bear on Monday at 4:30 PM, wounded it, and caught up with it later to finish it off. She made a perfect shot right behind the shoulder at 100 yards, but hit nothing vital. The bear was nearly dead when they found it.

She is very proud and they are a neat family of hunters. Her brother shot a bear on Tuesday and they are looking for it now.

nice bear!!!!! i have a bait out and have not hits yet, but i saw some fresh bear sign about 300yds from it. hopping it get hits tonight when i am sitting over it. gonna do some cub calls tonighs and hop to draw some attention.. 100yds is a bit far for a bait stand... i though mine was a bit far @ 40yds!! good bear though... mfm

mefiehme, how are the beechnuts, apples and blackberries up your way right now?

i got nuts and berries, and a corn field about a mile away :? I will check the corn field tomorrow... if it is hit i have a stand al up and ready for deer.... mfm

The guy who sent me the pic of the girl and the bear, told me this morning that out of 21 hunters at the camps last week, only 9 bears were taken.

He came home empty handed. His only opportunity was a 75 lb bear last day. He said bait sites were being hit only late at night and not real hard.
