I just went out to check on the horses and saw what looked like a pretty good buck at the far end of the pasture. Not wanting to spook them, (there were 3 or 4 but the grass is tall) I grabbed the halter on one horse and walked her out to within 40 yeards of this one buck. WOW!

A FULL rack consisting of ten points that stuck out beyond the ears by a good 4" per side. Nice dark velvet, and the buck just stood there eating and watching me, then eating again.
When I finally stepped out from behind the horse that buck did a flip over the fence and into the brush in about a half second!
I wish I had the camera with me.

I have been watching fawns for more than a month now and the ones around here are gaining weight and losing spots already.

This could be a good year!

Wow! That's a cool move Jack! Have you tried that before hiding behind a horse?

That's close to get to the old guy but he didn't have any difficulty spotting danger when he recognized a man.

Do you suppose he'll look twice next time at a horse?

Probably not, Tom. He was back out there last evening and again at 5 this am.
The idea popped into my head, I think from watching all the hunting shows. Like Jim Shockey hunting moose in BC. He uses a cut-out of a moose to walk behind to get in close. And the bowhunters for antelope do it too.

It was a pretty cool when it was happening!

Well, I went back out last night to check on the horses but it was starting to get dark so I only took the binocs instead of the camera. He was out there feeding again.
Where he was, along the fenceline, there is no place for a treestand so If his pattern holds, I'll need to place the blind out there at the end of this month to get him used to it.
I will be placing two treestands near the back of the pasture also. I'm going to have to start practicing with the antique bow again, too!

Tom, I'll be keeping an eye out there and if I can get some video I'll send it to you.

Tom, do you have 8mm capability? (handi-cam)

July 6, 2006 just got 5 to 7 minutes of video of this buck and one of his offspring. I went out to check the pasture and they were less than 50 yards from me and I spooked them. Went home for the video camera and snuck back. They were out about 150 yards and milling around munching some chow.
After a while they winded me and lazily walked to the fenceline and jumped over.

Too cool!

Well I now have over 30 minutes of video on this buck but most of it is at 150+ yards away at 20x. Fair quality but I want to get closer and get some 'still' shots.
I found two more biggies but they are way back in a swamp area on my land.

I'll be going to a friends house tonight who can take still photos from video. I hope to have digital pics soon!

Is this a buck that could cost me the $5,000 prize money for MVO's big buck promotion? One of my high school friend's dad used to walk beside his horse down his field to shoot coyotes that were getting too friendly with his cows.

Update on 'THE BIG ONE'

I have been filming this big ten point and a forkhorn since June 30 and since after the first incounter with them, thesee two have been the only ones out there. . . . . Until last night!I have several hours on tape of these two so I didn't bother coming home for the video camera. While I was into my second half hour of glassing from the barn, I noticed some odd movement off to the right of the others. I brought the binocs down and scanned that area but didn't notice any red/orange spots (which is the color of these deer at this point) so I brought the binocs back up to look some more and happened to point them right at another deer I had never seen before! This big boy was silver/gray and almost ghostly with a high, wide rack that sported forked G-2's. My first thought was "that looks like a Mule Deer!" but it wasn't.

The coloration of this deer allowed him to hide in plain sight as long as he was still. Now I'll have to spend a lot more time with the camera out there just in case.
4 1/2 weeks till bow season!

Yea there is a feature on the server temporarily disabled. Once all the sites have been restored that feature should be enabled allowing the emailer to werk properly. It will do the same thing when sending Private Messages.
