is it legal to use a handgun? to hunt in maine?

I believe that it is legal to hunt with a handgun, however, it must be in plain sight while you are hunting. I could be wrong, but I think I am right.

I believe you are right Ithaca. Hunting with a handgun is legal but it has to be a larger caliber than .22
You are also correct about not concealing your weapon while hunting with it, ever. Unless you have a permit to conceal.
There are states now that are opening up handgun only seasons for deer.

just went to a Hangun only special hunt on a hunting club in north florida, this past week , shot a small doe with my T/C 44mag with pmc starfire ammo..............heart shot and it ran about 20 yds............GA Moose
