Would you guys support the proposed "bucks by permit" system if in it was a requirement that all non-resident hunters had to have a Maine Guide? Roughly 10% of permits to go to non-residents......

Although it may make sense for most non-residents who do not have the time to scout or are farmiliar with the area they wish to hunt to hire a guide I do not think thatI would support that idea. Just think there are probabaly many non-residents who own camps and have hunted certain areas for many years, all of a sudden they would have to hire a guide to continue to do what they have been doing for years. At the end of the day to me it should be some ones personal choice as to wether to hire a guide. Good thought provoking post.

No fricking way in HELL would I ever support something like that. I grew up in Maine, have owned a camp in Haynesville for 15 years and would never ever ever ever hire a guide to hunt the areas I've come to know over the last decade and a half. You would successfully cut the non-resident hunting numbers down substantially on top of already crippling the economic drive the hunting season provides to the county with your proposal.

There are also people who can't afford a Guide. They would rather fill up their tank with gas and ride up with a couple hunting buddies and hit that piece of land they hunted last season. I actually think it would not benefit Guides in the long run. The idea orginally may be to land more money in the Guide's pocket but in the long run it would be detrimental to the sport and to the Guide Services!

Why make non residents use a guide???

I can't imagine any business that relys on nonresidents agreeing to this type of proposal.

It's the kiss of death for them, I would avoid any state or county with those restrictions.

What proposed buck permit system are you refering to?

I would suggest that State should consider issuing more than 10% of any permits to non residents... unless the extra revenue brought in by non residents isn't needed or wanted.

Boy you Maine Guides and business people are rich after all. LOL

The interesting part of this post is that many Canadian provinces have some sort of requirment that non-residents are required to hire a guide. I deer hunted Nova Scotia for many years and had to have family members sign "guide" papers prior to me being able to hunt.

Are you talking about non residents aliens or non residents of the province but Canadian citizens.

I guess that's a good way to get their citizens off government subsidies, I understand it's pretty widespread up there.

I know a few guys that hunted NB and were fuming because their guide was a drunk,,, drinking is what he did the whole time they were there, course that doesn't mean they're all like that.

I hope that forcing non residents to hire guides doesn't happen in Maine... I think it could backfire and devastate seasonal economies.

Sounds very counterproductive (at best) to me. I own property and camps in Maine. I run my guide business in Maine, and I'm a Registered (non-resident) Maine Guide. I stay in business because I provide the kind of service that keeps my clients coming back to me - NOT because they are FORCED to come back to me. I also know dozens of competent, out-of-state hunters that would go elsewhere if they were forced to hire a guide. Considering what the IF&W charges for a non-resident license, a lot of them aren't coming back anyway - and we're now going to force them to hire a guide? NOT! As a non-resident Maine guide, If I wanted to hunt on my own, would I have to hire a guide, or just invoice myself? Actually, I tip pretty good, so I might keep on hiring myself until I get rich.

Great god almighty Stweede you sure can get fired up!!! Glad to see you are a passionate man. As anyone can tell from the posts that a proposition to make Guides mandatory will not fly in Maine. And this is in a guide forum!!!! Sorry if I worried any of you......but no I haven't lost my mind.
Just wanted to see who was awake and ready to tangle......

Thank you for making me proud to be a County boy and a diehard Mainiac!!!!!!:pray3:
