Can anyone give me some advice on a good mechanical release?
Maybe a stupid question, but what the hell is a mechanical release?
the thing that goes on the wrist and holds the string
Get one with an adjustable trigger pull and with both jaws on pivots. Practice it just like a rifle, hold your sight picture and squeeeeze. A lot of different manufacturers make a good release, just visit your local pro-shop. I would personally stay away from one that requires a special attachment to the string. You never can tell how long some of these companies will be in business and if you need a replacement part, you might find yourself SOL.

One that swivels 360 degrees prevents string pinch. Also shooting with a loop works really well with releases. I shoot a Winns Free Flight because I like the way it all fits in the palm of my hand.
