Norm, over at "Outdoors With Norm" says that moose are getting smarter with each season and becoming harder to hunt.

Do you think this is true?
Have you altered your moose hunting tactics to compensate for this?

True, but the old ones don't get old standing by the road looking stupid. The truly big moose are back in the mountians where most people are too lazy to go. If more people hunted our moose like a western elk, they would kill bigger bulls. Just my .02

This is a good one for Mooseguide07....... no Virginia Moose aren't a stupid critter gift from santa Claus!!!! Yes you may find some stupid "road" moose. But the smart ones that attain any size are smarter than you!!!! They stay off the roads and hide back up in the woods.

hunt a moose one on one no vehicles involved and then tell me how stupid they are! like any other animal you will find some that you can fool easily but the majority of the ones you hunt one on one are darn smart. if you dont believe it take a bow, trudge off into the woods [not in a truck on foot] and tell me how many moose you kill. what do you suppose the moose kill would be if they outlawed venicles to be used in any way? strings

Moose are not stupid by any means. You will get the young ones to stand around and let you shoot them. But if you want a real trophy bull you had better know what you are doing because they know whats going on. If you think they are stupid go out and try and call a huge trophy in if you make one mistake its over and you will never see him. Also you need to get off the beating path to get a big trophy one on one as they have be come smarter over the years. Let one get thru 3 or 4 moose seasons with shooting around him and see how stupid they are. Better know what you are doing!!

To quantify MG07's opinion you have to keep in mind a guide may be in the woods as much as 80 hours or more per week. Scouting and hunting all six hunt days and scouting on sundays. If all you want is meat a cow will oblige you...the hunt will end day one. But go after a real moose ...1000lbs of Bull, and horns in the 45 inches or better class. Mg07 wasn't joking.... you will hunt hard and earn him....he won't be waiting around for you. The only thing stupid in the woods today is the guy riding around in his truck looking for a road killable moose. He'll find one...and say moose are stupid. But he'll never see that monster grampie moose hiding back in the woods just another twenty yards. Smart enough to know the road will get him killed.

ya know ive met hundred's of hunter's during the 06 hunt just riding ol'toat road's. (heater hunters ) dumb moose hunters ! most of these moose end up on some dump or land fill in massachusetts with the head missing...wasted meat ! now would you want to see a thousand pound or more animal out there ? no if i had to it would be an interstate moose skinny as hell full of tick's kind of moose....not a real hunters moose with a rack big anough to hold your ford f-350 camper and all......plus beer cooler( who agree's?) :frog: that's what im trying to say I-95 moose are dumb as a cow like the hunter's who hunt them now how many of you hunt I-95 ? or the golden road for example !

Back when it all began, they were dumb as dirt, but they are now very cunning. If you can call half decent, they are much easier than say a deer, but they are certainly not easy to hunt these days. Heck, dont even see them along roadside during legal hours near as much when its not season!!
