posted this on another forum. basically i think we are going after subday hunting the wrong way. the onlytime i have made any head way with some one against it was after i asked him how he would feel if he couldnt ride his sled on sunday. after all, since his excuse was hunting disturbs the peace of a sunday afternoon, i assured him that i make a hell of a lot less noise walking thru the woods with my bow than he does on his sled. take it further, many people who dont hunt just flat out say we dont NEED to hunt on sunday, we have 6 other days. well, you dont NEED to fish on sunday, you dont NEED to look at birds on sunday, you dont NEED to hike on sunday........i have gotten a little ways with folks that have never looked at that way b4. i am only one person but if we all tried that approach who knows, we cant do any worse than we are now.

I think it's a matter of people just don't want us hunting - period but, you are absolutely right. Eduation, facts, reasoning, etc. will go much further toward an end, that yelling, fighting, name calling, etc.

not to be differant

But i think hunting on sunday should be aloud , I mean really why not? And for what ever reason that people may have to beleave that we shouldn't then they can stay home on sunday . We all have different beleaves and thats what this country is about. I mean what did they do way back when what they ate was what they killed, Not eat on sunday? Come on its just control its not like its open season all year around and some people work six days a week . why should and those people suffer ?

Sunday Hunting

Sunday hunting should deffinetly be aloud. Us kids at school really only get 4 or 5 days besides Thanksgiving and all the days aroud it that we have off. Sunday would benefit us and others. They say it's a law so people can walk their land. HELLO, wear some damn orange you know.

Cobbett, your such a...a....a....a school teacher. You crack me up sometimes. Listen, Sunday hunting is always a sore subject for a wide variety of reasons. I'm not against it that's for sure BUT and aren't there always buts.

Religious reasons are religious reasons.....personal and probably should be left that way. While it plays a role in our decision making and for some it's heritage but today, it's not a great tool for arguing for or against Sunday hunting.

My biggest concern is not whether or not Cobbett gets another game tag but the lobby of the Maine property owner. We need them. They are our bread and butter. We can't piss em off. If we do, well, you know the outcome.

If you believe surveys and polls, Maine landowners are against Sunday hunting. Until that changes, I'm backing off this.

The Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, under the direction of George Smith, has continued their insistence on pushing legislation to open Sunday hunting. Many feel we should back off and work with Fish and Game to get a better landowner/sportsman relations going.

That's just my take. I respect any and all religious perspectives on the issue, the economics, the opportunities for others etc. but for me, right now I guess I'll treat the landowner with kid gloves.

On an aside to this issue. I once thought that adding a Sunday to hunting may force an overall shortening of the season because of added hunting pressure. I was pretty much told by biologists at MDIFW that a Sunday hunt would have very little effect on the overall deer kill and what little effect it had could be handled through minor adjustments in the issuing of Any-Deer permits.

Well in many other southern states, sunday hunting is only open on private land with premission. Should solve that problem.

PS. not only can you hut on sunday in NH, but kids can hunt (free I might add), and you can take a deer with a bow and still have your gun license. Yup..... more tags.

I certainly agree with Kenton6 on this one, well said my friend. Sunday hunting is not allowed for the very reasons kenton mentioned. It has absolutely nothing to do with religion. people feel (tree huggers) they need a day to enjoy the wilderness. I guess doing that in april, may, june, july, august, and september is not enough. I am certainly for sunday hunting. I know way to many hunters who work all week from light to dark and the weekend is there only time to hunt. leaves them one day, if they don't work on saturday. it certaily is not right, but kenton has the right attitude. Going in this with the gloves off is not a good idea. We certaily need the relations with the landowners to start with. Hopefully it will all work out some day.

Cobbett - I agree with you that Sunday hunting on private land with landowner permission would solve the potentially angry landowner problem.

Nothing will ever silence the anti-hunter.

My opinion is that if we cant hunt on sunday due to religiuos reasons or the woods needing quiet time then no one should be allowed to snowmobile or fourwheel on sunday. We are the reason all these people have a place to go and animals to see and we are the only ones that cant use it. It is time people stopped being afraid of pissing off landowners and go talk to them. If they wanna post their land on Sunday then go ahead. I personally have only been turned away from posted land once. Most of these LO's are decent understanding people and just wanna know who is out there. Hunters have been turning tail and quivering for years because the anti's can throw out POLLS AND FACTS and it scares everybody off. I personally think the only thing keeping hunters from Sunday is ourselves.

Here in N.Y. we hunt on Sundays and not adverse impact is observed in the game or in the relations with landowners.
The western tier of the state close to hunting on Sunday for years, have opened again hunting on Sunday.

For Maine I think that will be a benefit for the bear outfitters, as out of state hunters will have and added day (that will be an incentive to go to Maine) to hunt.

Never heard of such a thing till I came to the great NorthEast. My Sundays consist of church (if I want to), followed by knockng a few birds down and watching them roast in the oven while watching football. Giving hunters a possible one day a week is the worst thing I have heard of. You'll find those policy makers' in the mall Sunday morning guaranteed!
