moose hunting in Maine.

7mm Rem Mag or 340 Weatherby Mag?

a couple of my hunting compadres have offered me a gun for the moose hunt being as my regular deer rifle is probably a bit scanty ( .303 savage ) for moose.

looking at the ballistic stuff the .340 seems to pack about 25-35% more pop than the 7mm. i pulled my info off from the Guns and Ammo magazine website.

i guess my quesion is, is there such a thing as too much "pop"? i don't want to blow a hole through 1 moose and hit another one about 2 zip codes away. i'd likely shoot 175gr's in the 7mm and 200gr's in the .340

the hunting is in District 3, which means maybe some thick stuff or maybe some agricultural field stuff. both have some quality scopes, are bolt actions and i would be doing a bunch of practicing with either before the season naturally. i've shot the .340 before and although the recoil is a bit stiff, i did'nt find it too bothersome. haven't touched off the 7mm yet but think i could probable get handy with it after a bunch of training up.

obviously (?), both are probably sufficiently adequate for the task at hand, but what would you pick?

thanks for any advice.

I agree, a well placed shot (8 inches down from the top of the hump) with the 303 will most likely drop a moose.
But, you must consider your down-range energy. If you end up seeing a moose a 300+ yards that 303 most likely will not do the job.

I would have to say borrow the 7mm Magnum because it is more than enough and you can find the ammo here in most places. Maine mosse hunt is the hunt of a lifetime. You will want to bring at least tow boxes of ammo, one to use and one to lose. If you knock the scope off and have to resight? more ammo. Set the ammo on the truck hood and drive off? More ammo.

Don't laugh, I have seen them all!
